Christ on the Mount of Olives is characteristic of Goya’s later works with its dark tones and sweeping strokes. Goya depicts a moment from the Gospel of Luke with Jesus on His knees on the Mount of Olives, arms out in agony. His rendered white robe signifies His purity, as an angel descending from Heaven provides the only light in the darkened oil painting on wood, and holds a chalice to confirm Christ’s approaching sacrifice of suffering.
