About
One of two portraits that Bacon did of his friend Michel Leiris (the French Surrealist writer and anthropologist) this 1978 painting showcases the colorful and blob-like profile of Leiris against a dark background. His wrinkled features, such as his wide eyes, mouth, and triangular nose, seemingly melt off of his face. Interestingly, Leiris' distant left ear becomes attached to his nose thanks to a thin strand of white that Bacon incorporates into his portrait.
