About
Following the death of his lover George Dyer, the 1970s found Bacon painting self-portraits as a way to cope with the deaths occurring around him. His 1971 Self-Portrait shows himself with a melting expression, consisting of large eyes, a triangle like nose, and a slipping mouth. Interestingly, while the face appears to be dripping off of Bacon’s head, the outline of his image remains a solid (albeit a bit wavy) line against the dark background.
