About
This painting captures Stettheimer’s signature style of blending fantasy with reality. Depicted are Florine and her three sisters, sitting alongside their mother, whose birthday they are celebrating. The women seem to be wiped out by the titular heat, perhaps in response to the many flaming candles atop their mother’s birthday cake in a playful jab at her advancing age. The two women closest to the cake appear the most exhausted, then middle two in the green and red chairs respectively, followed lastly by the mother who is barely perturbed. The fore, middle, and backgrounds seem to be delineated by the colors of the floor, divided into green, yellow, and red sections; however, the figures are all the same size. The playfulness of this piece speaks to Florine’s commitment to her own interests, regardless of what was proper or popular in the art world.
