In this painting, (which caused a sensation at the 1879 Salon exhibition), Eva Gonzalès depicts a young man and woman at a theatre box. Using her future husband, Henri Guérard, and her sister, Jeanne Gonzalès, as models for the painting, there is a startling sense of detachment from the duo. The woman appears to be engaged in the performance, leaning forward, whilst the man is cold and uninterested in both the woman and performance. He looks off to the side of the theatre box, leaving viewers to speculate what it is that grabs his attention. This painting is an example of the popular theatre box motif within Impressionism, representing both isolation and exposure to entertainment.
