About
The Arab Merchant is a painting by Eugne Delacroix. It depicts a woman haggling with an Arab merchant over a piece of jewelry. The merchant sits on the floor and holds out the necklace for her to see. The woman is well dressed and engages the merchant in a discussion about the transaction. A young man stands behind the woman and observes the scene. The wall behind the subjects is relatively bare which draws attention to the subjects themselves. Delacroix also focuses on shading to create a lifelike image.
