Mephistopheles and the Pupil, from Goethe’s Faust, is an illustration by Eugne Delacroix. This illustration is based on a story from the Goethe’s play Faust. In this illustration, a man in a graduation cap and gown is sitting in a chair at the center of the painting. He is engaged in conversation with a man next to him. On the right, a man, presumably Mephistopheles is peeking out of a curtain. In the play, Faust makes a deal with the Devil (Mephistopheles) for ultimate knowledge at the price of his soul. Delacroix focused on creating a naturalistic image of the scene, focusing on contouring and shading to create the texture of the background and capture the emotion of the subjects.
