Mephistopheles and Faust riding in the Night, Illustration for Faust by Goethe is a sketch by Eugne Delacroix. This sketch depicts two men, Mephistopheles and Faust. Mephistopheles is a demon, commonly found in German folklore. In the folklore, Faust makes a deal with the Devil (Mephistopheles) for ultimate knowledge at the price of his soul. In this sketch, they are riding away in the night. On the right, the silhouettes of a man being hanged is seen, representing death and the price that Faust has to pay. Delacroix used black as the background of the scene to represent the sinister narrative.
