About
Le 28 Juillet 1830: la Liberte Guidant le people (Liberty Leading the People) is a Romantic painting by Eugne Delacroix. It commemorates the July Revolution of 1830. In the center of the painting, a woman with a Phrygian cap raises the French revolution flag (now known as the French flag). She is known as Marianne and is a personification of liberty and leads the people in revolution. Around her are fallen men, but she leads more people towards liberty. The fighters behind her represent diversity in social class, holding weapons and have a look of determination in their eyes. Smoke fills the air and in the top right corner, the buildings of Paris are seen.
