About
Female Nude, Study for Liberty Leading the People is a sketch by Eugne Delacroix. This sketch depicts a nude woman with her arm stretched out holding something above her head. Delacroix focused more on the top half of the woman, and his pencil strokes became looser towards the bottom of the woman. This study was for his painting, Liberty Leading the People in which he used this female form to represent Marianne, the personification of liberty that leads the French people into Revolution. The painting commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, and the female is the central figure that enhances the narrative of the scene.
