About
Dante and Virgil in the Underworld is a painting by Eugne Delacroix in the style of Romanticism. It is the first major painting by Delacroix and signals a shift in his artistic style from Neo-Classical to Romanticism. This painting takes inspiration from Dante’s Inferno and depicts Dante and Virgil in the City of the Dead attempting to cross the River Styx. The boat in the water is tormented and attacked by tormented souls. As Dante loses his balance, he is held by Virgil who steadies him. This painting creates a character narrative that is seen in his later paintings.
