About
Cleopatra and the Peasant is a painting by Eugne Delacroix in the style of Romanticism. It depicts Cleopatra sitting in a chair listening to a peasant talk about his basket of items. The background behind the figures is relatively bare, focusing the viewers on the figures. A light source shines between the two figures, which illuminates the otherwise dark scene. Cleopatra is depicted wearing jewels with relatively simple clothing. The peasant is shirtless and has an animal skin draped over his body. Delacroix emphasized naturalism and painted the details of their body forms and muscles. The pose of both figures shows a narrative and prompt the viewer to question what they are discussing.
