About
Kirchner had a background with the military, volunteering to serve in 1914, but being discharged in 1915 due to a nervous breakdown. He would spend two years recovering in Switzerland. This piece, however was painted long before that in 1905. It is thought that Kirchner’s style and technique for this piece was influenced by the 1905 exhibition of Vincent van Gogh’s work in Dresden, which is where Kirchner was living art an art student at the time meaning he may have seen it. This hypothesis is strengthened by the way Kichner handled the sky, echoing van Goghs iconic swirling skies seen in Starry Night (1889) and others.
