Part of Kirchner’s “tapestry period,” this piece depicts his lodgings in Switzerland. Kirchner uses a mix of horizontal and vertical brush strokes to creat a woven effect, giving the period its name. Die Brücke (The Bridge), the German expressionist group Kirchner was a lead member of, was interest in what a life of freedom, sexuality, and intensity would look like, making the Bohemian lifestyle particularly appealing to them.
