About

This glass negative captures the front entrance of Luna Park. There are two types of glass negative techniques: the collodion wet plate and the silver gelatin dry plate. The collodion is spread on a glass plate, which immediately is placed in silver nitrate that turns the collodion into a photosensitive silver iodide. These steps have to happen before the plate dries. The silver gelatin dry plate, on the other hand, would allow photographers to take their time to process the print. Although it takes time to make a fine print through this process, the great tonal range and ability to capture the details of the object led many artists to prefer this process. As shown in this glass negative print, even people's daily wear was clearly captured in one swift moment, taking the viewers back to a regular day in the early 1900s.
