About
In this 1929 work, Indian Church, Carr has created a moving and almost surreal representation of a church built by the local Nuu-chah-nulth tribe of the Yuquot community on the Nootka Island, just west of Vancouver Island. The forest which surrounds and nearly engulfs the simple, white church is rendered with rich shades of green and brown. The towering foliage is surrealist in its simultaneous familiarity and physical impossibility, while the petite church and its adjacent simple cross headstones are rendered in a nearly Impressionist fashion.
