About
Nourse painted La Mere, in 1888, and submitted it to the Paris Salon. The Paris Salon subsequently accepted her and displayed this painting. Nourse sought to portray the woman and the child in a life-like manner. Her mastery over oil paintings and brush strokes is evident in her ability to capture the details of both the sleeping child and the mother’s face and hair. In addition, Nourse uses color to depicts light and its interaction with the two figures to create a painting in a realist style.
