About
This painting is a portrait of the Duchesse de Polignac, a close friend of Marie Antoinette wearing a straw-hat and a costume of elegant courtier-shepherdess. Madame LeBrun paints a warm golden light shining on the duchess. She uses the brushstrokes created by oil painting and color to capture the tenderness of the face, the relaxed stance, and highlights the details of the hat and dress. The informal clothing represented a stark contrast of the fitting, formal dresses more commonly worn in Versailles. The complete composition created a life-like image of the duchess in a relaxed, intimate setting.
