About
This royal portrait depicts Marie-Antoinette, Marie-Thérèse, Louis-Charles and Louis-Joseph. This portrait was used as propaganda and was exhibited at the Salon of 1787 at the Louvre. Madame LeBrun was careful not to portray the royal family in their extravagant lifestyle, instead the painting aimed at connecting the royal family to the population of France and reminding them of the royal family’s recent tragedy. Marie-Antoinette, dressed in a red velvet dress, is seen holding her child whilst her daughter wraps her arm around her affectionately. An empty cradle is also intentionally shown to remind the public of the recent death of their daughter Marie-Sophie-Beatrice.
