About
Schiele thinly veils the homoeroticism of this piece with the title describing the half-nude pair as “two friends.” Schiele distorts their features, especially the exposed buttocks and legs of the woman in a teal blouse, laying on top of her shirtless lover with a royal blue skirt. The limited clothing of the lovers are the only pigmented parts of the line drawing, aside from the shared rosiness of each lover’s lips and nipple. The pair hold each other with a gentle tenderness– as indicated in the title. Through his art, Schiele explored sexuality in the highly conservative society of Vienna, depicting men and women in both heterosexual and homosexual moments of intimacy.
