This portrait of Austrian mime artist, Domenik Osen, depicts him with a face of vibrant detail. There is a theatrical quality to Schiele’s rendering of Osen’s face, painting him with dimensions of teal, yellow, orange, and pink shading alongside dramatic eyelashes and red lips. Osen is also given perfectly groomed eyebrows and subtle facial hair. From the neck down, Osen is depicted in singular lines of charcoal to give a basic form of a clothed torso. The intricate, bold details of the face attest to the subject’s profession of relying on his facial expressions to fully communicate where words cannot be used.
