About
Two on the Aisle captures a moment before a theater show. It depicts one woman sitting online in the box, and to right, a couple prepares the sit-down. The composition of the painting places the viewer in the scene as if they were standing in the aisle observing the three people. The woman is adjusting her jacket on the seat whilst the man looks up and is clearly intrigued at his sight. Instead of capturing the actual show, Hopper chooses to show a mundane moment of three human subjects. Without using a complex composition with many aspects, Hopper creates a story with his subjects. He creates questions in the mind of his viewers and prompts them to contemplate the scene and the interactions of the humans.
