About
The Sheridan Theater, painted in 1937, depicts an empty movie theater. Hopper painted the beauty in mundane activities, and this painting captured the rise of the Hollywood motion picture. This painting was Hopper’s imagination and captured one of his favorite past times. In this painting, movie theaters are transformed from dark rooms to a vibrant luxurious room. This is captured by the vibrant colors of the interiors, and the small lights around the room highlighted the various colors he used. Three subjects can be seen in the painting, one woman leans up against the railing watching the film whilst a couple in the corner has a conversation, capturing the social aspect of movie-going.
