About
Mansard Roof is a watercolor painting depicting a Victorian house in Gloucester and shows Hopper’s enthusiasm for architecture. Showing the house from an angle, he was able to capture a balanced structure of the asymmetric house. By layering different colors, he showed the details of the house, as well as the different textures and building materials. Hopper uses a vibrant color palette capturing the summer daylight, and the various colors and materials of the house. During the 1920s, the Victorian house was considered outdated, however, through this painting Hopper sought to prompt his viewers to think about change in both architecture and socially.
