About
The Lighthouse at Two Lights depicts the silhouette of a lighthouse against the blue sky. The painting is set in the rocky hills of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Hopper often spent his summers in Maine as an escape from New York. It is an example of Hopper’s fascination with architecture, including vernacular American structures such as a lighthouse in Maine. Using a bright pastel palette, he captures the bright summer day. In addition, he uses shading to define the forms of the architecture. Hopper creates a defined horizon line separating the vibrant blue sky with the grass hiils. The structure stands tall and symbolizes a resiliency against the changing forces of nature and time.
