About
Sunday is a painting representing Hopper’s vision of 20th century America. Instead of showing an important or extravagant scene, Hopper captures the mundane lives of Americans and shows the beauty and pain in the ordinary. This painting was completed in 1926 when America was entering the Great Depression and represents the anxiety surrounding the period. The painting depicts a man sitting on the street with buildings behind him. He is staring at the front in contemplation, which can also represent Hopper’s thoughts on the human condition.
