About
Summertime, painted in 1943, depicts a woman standing on the steps of her apartment building looking out at the street. This painting was Hopper’s documentation of the economic upswing caused by World War II that was starting to affect the nation, as well as the relaxed societal standard of youth and women in this country who had to work due to the war. The bright color palette captures the bright sunny day, and the sunlight shines through the woman’s dress rendering it semi-transparent. The dress of the woman symbolized the economic prosperity of the country since the Depression and the freedom that many women felt.
