About
Sierra Madre at Monterrey depicts the Mexican mountain range, the sky above it, and the interaction between the landscape and architecture. This vantage point of the painting was based on Hopper’s view from his hotel room. He shows the roof of a cluster of buildings that are dwarfed compared to the large mountains, effectively showing the relationship between humans and nature. Using shading, he paints the details in the ridges of the mountains to depict nature and its beauty. The mountains and the sky show his expertise in watercolors and his ability to layer the colors to create a naturalistic view of the landscape.
