About
Shoshone Cliffs, Wy depicts a cliff landscape with water in the foreground and the sky in the background. Hopper layered colors and brushstrokes to capture the striations and shading in the cliff rocks in addition to their unique forms. This contrasts with the pale blue sky, with dry brushstrokes depicting the movement of clouds. The color of the sky is echoed by the body of water near the cliffs that reflect the light of the sky. The landscape evokes a sense of isolation and serenity, however, similar to many of his other paintings, he prompts viewers to think about elements that influence the painting that is not depicted in the painting.
