About
Seven A.M. depicts a storefront in the morning next to a line of trees. This painting is an example of a theme that Hopper often used, the contrast between concealing and revealing. The bright white storefront contrast with its surroundings, however, there is an eeriness about it. The store is empty, and the shelves are bare. One of the curtains is pulled down, and the other window shows simple decorations. Hopper leaves the nature of the store’s business open to interpretation, and similar to his other paintings prompts his viewers to question whether there is an unforeseen element influencing the view.
