About
Route 6, Eastham depicts a road and a house next to it, and the road is flanked on either side by vegetation. This painting is an example of a theme that Hopper often explored concerning the interactions of man-made structures and nature. Hopper played with lights and shading to highlight the sharp shapes of man-made structures, such as the straight street and the geometric house. This is contrasted with the organic forms of the tall grass, tree, and the clouds in the sky. However, painting them both together creates a sense of balance and harmony and prompts viewers to look at how both structures and nature meld together in our modern world.
