About
Room in Brooklyn is one of several of Hopper’s artworks that depicted an individual looking out of the window into the city. In this painting, a woman is sitting on a rocking chair next to a picturesque window of her apartment, looking at the cityscape Brooklyn. Hopper sought to capture the human condition in a modern city and show the effect of modernity which can often result in isolation and loneliness. However, Hopper also captures the feelings of relaxation and serenity that comes with being alone. Using vibrant colors, he shows the daylight and the vibrant city. The light shines into her apartment which livens her space and the vase of flowers brings an element of nature into the interior of a city apartment.
