About
Roofs of the Cobb Barn depict a bright countryside scene and the top of a Cobb Barn and various smaller houses. This painting showed Hopper’s fascination with architecture, including vernacular American houses. Hopper used a bright and vibrant green palette to show the landscape and the green hills of the countryside. The sun shines directly on the rooftops rendering them bright and clearly defined against their background. The rest of the house falls under the shade of the roof and is consequently painted darker. The contrasting difference of shades allow the houses to stand out.
