About
Marshall’s House depicts a house in the countryside. This painting is an example of Hopper’s fascination with American vernacular architecture and depicting the mundane life of ordinary people. In this painting, he uses a light color palette to show the time of day. In addition, through his use of brushstrokes, he captures the effect of wind on the landscape, most notably on the swaying long grass in the foreground. His composition places the viewer in the scene, as if they are looking at the house from a distance and evokes a sense of serenity.
