About
Lombard’s House is a painting of a house in South Truro, a village in Cape Cod. Hopper and his wife summered there from 1930 onwards. He painted several artworks depicting this house. Hopper explored the theme of the interaction between man-made houses and the natural landscape. The light palette captures the summer day. The white house contrasts the natural green of the vast landscape behind it. Hopper layers colors and brushstrokes to create movement in the painting, seen through the leaning tall grass and trees. The painting evokes a feeling of serenity and calmness.
