About
House at Dusk expands on themes that are commonly found in Hopper’s paintings such as loneliness and anonymity. The painting depicts a building at dusk. In the building, there is a silhouette of a woman sitting with her back facing the viewers, seemingly unaware of the changing nature of the sky. Hopper uses a mixture of colors to show the transitional time of the day. The viewers can sense looming darkness that is going to dominate over the light, creating a feeling of suspense. In addition, Hopper’s attention to the details of the buildings shows his enthusiasm for architecture and its interaction with nature and the cityscape.
