About
High Noon depicts the sunlight shining on the front of a house in a vast landscape. Hopper uses a bright color palette to capture the daylight and the smaller details of the house. This is contrasted with dark spaces that form sharp, defined shapes. The landscape is vast, open, and bare, which isolates the house and draws the viewer’s attention to the house itself. A woman stands by the open front door and stares out ahead of her. Hopper usually depicts human subjects alone and paints the themes of loneliness and isolation. Similar to many of his other paintings, his visuals leave the viewer with many questions about if other elements in the scene is unknown to the viewer.
