About
Dawn in Pennsylvania represents the loneliness and anonymity of modern life, which was symbolized by the railroad. In the static scene, the composition immerses the viewer into the painting, making it seem as if they are standing on the railway platform. The dark colors infiltrated with spaces of light the contrast between the morning light and the dark sky lingering as the sun starts to rise. This highlights the quietness and eerie feeling of the area. The railroad in the left of the painting reveals that the train may be in motion, or hint at the incoming crowd of people who will soon fill the platform.
