About
Custom House, Portland is a painting of the bottom of the Custom House building in Portland, Maine. This painting is representative of Hopper’s fascination with architecture and depicts the classical building on the empty street. Hopper uses shading to capture the details of the building. The whiteness of the building differs from the darker building to the left of the Custom House. The darker building is painted in brown and dark green and has words written on it. The contrast between the colors and architectural forms represent the relationship between the old and the new, as well as the evolving cities.
