This painting is an example of a theme that Hopper often explored, which concerned the interaction between man-made structures and nature. The bright color palette captures the bright, summer day. Also, his small brushstrokes show the movement of the wind and its effect on the sand, grass, and clouds. The vibrant colors of the houses contrast with the natural colors in the natural elements. However, the diagonal staircase leading from the houses to the beach shows a connection between the two.
