About

Captain Upton’s House, painted in 1927, depicting the eastern side of the Two Lights Lighthouse complex in Maine. Hopper often painted lighthouse to capture the geometric forms under the sunlight and the consequent shadows it created compared to its natural surroundings. In this painting, Hopper used white and grey tones to show the different elements of the house. In addition, he used different shades of orange to show the panes of glass in the lighthouse. The background and foreground of the lighthouse are the vast blue sky and green hills respectively. The organic forms of nature contrast the lighthouse and create a sense of balance.
