About
Barn and Silo, Vermont depicts a wooden barn in a vast open countryside. During the late 1920s, Hopper painted many artworks using abandoned barns as the subject to show the early effects that the Great Depression has on the agricultural industry. Hopper layered colors and brushwork to show the desolate, abandoned barn and how it was neglected. This contrasts with the bright colors of the open fields and the mountains, highlighting the difference between the two.
