About
August in the City depicts the side of a house and a glimpse into the house throw a large window, which reveals a woman getting ready. Hopper often paints about feelings of isolation and solitude, however, in this particular painting, the routine of the woman getting ready also prompts viewers to feel calm. Hopper makes the light source of his painting clear, and by using shadows and the layering of colors, he shows the architectural elements of the house. Similar to his other paintings, although the visual is thoughtful and serene, the viewer also senses that there might be something else hidden from our view and makes us wonder about what is missing from the image.
