About
Approaching a City depicts a railway and a barrier with the cityscape behind it. He doesn’t use vibrant colors to depict travels of exciting places, instead, he uses somber colors such as gray and brown to depict common spaces that travelers experience such as train stations, bridges, streets, and hotels. This composition of this painting places the viewer in the middle of the action, and it seems like they are riding the train into a city. The perspective evokes a sense of deceleration as the train arrives at its destination, and the barrier separates the viewer from the rest of the city showing an ordinary scene of travel.
