About
Adam’s House was painted during one of Hopper’s summer trips to Gloucester, Massachusetts. This painting depicts a white house on a street and explores the themes of how man-made houses interact with nature. Hopper uses a light color palette to capture the cheerful nature of the scene, emphasizing the whiteness of the house and the pale blue sky. The telephone pole, painted in dark brown, presents a stark contrast to the rest of the painting, as Hopper emphasizes the changes in technology. On the left side of the painting, the viewer catches a glimpse of vegetation providing some insight into how the area would have looked like without humans.
