About
Fertility depicts a tree in between a man and woman, seemingly farmers, alluding to the Adam and Eve motif we see in his other works. The woman holds a basket full of red berries by her rounded belly, while the man hunches over with his cane nearby, amongst leafy lush greens. The fertility of the woman and vegetation is apparent but the man stoops and stares at an amputated branch, suggesting the man– and by extension Munch’s– fear of fertility in the face of losing his ability to create art.
