Some of Manet's paintings have been edited or "completed" by art dealers in order to help facilitate their sale. This is evidenced by photographs of Manet's studio following his death which show some works looking different from how they looked later when going to sale, as well as modern technology using hyperspectral imaging and UV illumination. Manet's signature was added after his death and the object in the woman's hand, either a walking stick or parasol, was edited for clarity. Some edits to this painting have been attributed to Manet himself however; the woman's nose was formerly smaller and sharper, her lips were fuller, and her hat was larger. The extent to which is was altered by the artist versus later dealers in contested and continues to be studied.
