About
This reclined portrait is the last in a series of women resting on couches that Manet did in 1873. It features the model Nina de Callias, known as Nina de Villard before her marriage to Hector de Callias, though her legal name was Marie-Anne Gaillard. She was thirty when this piece was created, and had a fondness for alcohol that contributed to her early death nine years later. Nina/Marie-Anne was the host of one of the most brilliant salons in Paris where she loved to receive guests, she would often wear an Algerian style gown like the one seen here. The wall on the background has fans pinned to it, not uncommon at the time among artists, and is identifiable as Manet's studio wall.
