About
Jeanne Duval was a mixed race actress who became the muse to poet Charles Baudelaire in 1842 and the two would continue their relationship for a decade. Duval was paralysed in one leg due to an illness, and Beaudelaire supported her. In this composition Manet paints Duval resting on a sofa, one legs peeks out from under her dress and is mirrored by the hand resting on the back of the sofa. The voluminous gown she wears drapes across the sofa and the floor, and features subtle white stripes.
