About
This portrait depicts the French actor Philibert Rouviere in the role of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The powerful emotion of the piece are those the character, not of Rouviere himself. He’s dressed in elaborate fencing garb, hat in hand, fencing foil at his feet. The lack of background but strong light shining on Rouviere is reminiscent of a sparsely decorated stage, as if Manet caught him at the intense moment at the beginning of a dramatic monologue.
